Celebration of New Ethiopian Year in Addis Ababa Comes with the New Innovation of Electronic Ticketing for Parking Payment.
Continuing with its drive towards automation, the Traffic Management Authority (TMA) of Addis Ababa is expected to roll out a digital parking ticket system in the Ethiopian New Year. It intends to bring coordination in the city’s dislocated parking system run by 350 youth unions and replace it with more digital means of monitoring and operation.
According to Biniyam Getachew, Director of Parking Research & Management at TMA, the new system will enhance income generation while alleviating the problems of searching for parking space. The Authority working with Infratech comes up with useful application for parking policemen based in different areas, which is used for noting time, duration and leaving of vehicles. All payments can be made through all digital banking means.
“All the conflicts that have been there in terms of squabbles with parking officers are no more,” Binyam noted. “In terms of how much the levy will be on the ticket, it will now be computerized, and the ticket will automatically come up with the full amount with all taxes.”
Apart from the digital ticketing system, TMA is also bringing 1,500 units of computerized tablet devices for the traffic police. These will help the officers in imposing penalties, checking driver’s license and searching for parking offenders.
At present, the Authority retains 20 percent of the parking tickets revenue collected by the officers, who have been under the attack for not ticketing all the time. The new system will reorganize the rate structure into multiple levels and aims to curtail such unethical practices.
